Biking for Socks

UPDATE: Thank you everyone for your support. We are very pleased to announce that over 2,800 pairs of socks were collect as well as $1,800. Way to go team!!!

We are excited to be doing a sock drive (along with a community bike ride: May 8, 2010 – Meet between 9:30-10:00am – details below). We’ll be collecting “no show” ankle socks for teens and elementary age students. We will be gathering socks from now through May 8, 2010. You are invited to drop socks off at any location below or bring them on the day of the community bike ride. Our goal with this sock drive is to build up a reserve so that we can resource local homeless students with socks through the next year (or more). If you have other creative ideas about getting involved too, let us know.

We are very excited about our upcoming “Biking for Socks” event on May 8, 2010. We are doing a community bike ride in order to accomplish three things: 1) Bring awareness to the problem of student homelessness in the FCUSD; 2) Collect socks for homeless kids in the FCUSD; and 3) Gather up a few bucks to be able to give to the District Liaison for Homeless Services so she can meet the needs of students on an “as needed” basis – meaning that when the neediest of students come to her, she can simply take care of some of the things they need – whether clothing, deodarant, shoes, study materials, etc….

There will be two bike rides in this one event- a short 20 minute ride (one way) and then a more experienced 30 mile ride (round-trip). Anyone can participate. Beyond the bike ride, there will be other ways to get involved (in case you are not a bike person). Please see THIS blog post to hear more about opportunities for involvement.

We will meet at 2197 Chase Drive in Rancho Cordova between 9:30-10:00am on May 8, 2010. The short ride will be about 20 minutes or so from Hagan Park to River Bend Park (formerly Goethe Park – just before the big bridge). The longer ride will go from Hagan Park to Bicycle’s Plus in Folsom at 705 Gold Lake Drive Folsom, CA 95630 (this bike shop is roughly 15 miles from Hagan Park and is located immediately off of the bike trail).

You can sign up on Facebook HERE for the ride (or let us know by email or phone that you’re coming). You don’t have to formally RSVP, but it helps us plan best to get an idea of who’s coming.

Thank you for your heart for local kids in Folsom and Rancho Cordova.

Bike riders are invited to pitch in a few bucks on the day of the bike ride too. We’d like to raise $783 to give to the District Liaison for Homeless Services. A suggested donation is $5.00 per rider or $10.00 per houshold. If you’re low on money, don’t even worry about it. Please just come and enjoy the day (seriously). Checks can be made payable to “Cordova Community Council” with “Project 680″ in the memo section.

We are partnering with “20 Tons in 2010” also for this event, so we are very excited to welcome many participants who have an appetitite to get healthy as well as advocate for local kids. What a great combination.

More details will be announced very soon. For the time being, please see THIS blog post to see how you can team up with us if you so desire.
